A two meter stratigraphic interval within the Chowan River Formation of North Carolina contains a thicket of branching coral, Septastrea crassa (Holmes), associated with a diverse macrofaunal assemblage. The thicket modified a local shelf habitat by providing protection and feeding opportunities for certain vagrant epifaunal species. Faunal adjustments wrought by the thicket and thicket growth represent autogenic succession. Coral growth rates and preservation suggest a time span of about 100–300 years for thicket development.
Bottom shoaling, associated with a eustatic regression, caused movement of a depth controlled environmental gradient during thicket growth. As the habitat changed, a plane bottom macrofaunal assemblage replaced the thicket assemblage by reordering abundances of intergradational species and introducing a few new species. Faunal density, diversity, trophic structure, and modes of life of component species were altered during replacement.
Observed temporal community changes are best explained as gradual faunal adjustments along a shelf stress gradient. Short term allogenic or autogenic events may temporarily perturb gradual changes. Changes associated with thicket development are interpreted as a brief autogenic perturbation of long term community replacement.

The coral reef inhabiting tubeworms from the Marshall Islands have been studied by few authors mainly by samplings in Enewetak Atoll. We report several new records of serpuline and spirorbine tubeworms from Enewetak Atoll as well as from Kwajalein, Utirik and Rongelap Atolls. Twenty-one species of Serpulinae and seven species of Spirorbinae are described and illustrated with line drawings, colour and/or scanning electron microscopy photographs. Neodexiospira turrita nom. nov. is proposed to replace Neodexiospira preacuta. Enewetak Atoll still represents the most species-rich atoll in the Marshall Islands but this is most likely the result of a greater sampling effort in this atoll for the last few decades.

The study of paleoecologic processes through geologic time requires careful analysis of the stratigraphic distribution of fossils. Collections from stratigraphic units of varying thickness provide data needed to describe the spatial and temporal patterns of fossil species, populations, and paleocommunities. Obviously, collections that have broad stratigraphic spacing will reveal only long-term trends. Narrowing the stratigraphic distance between collections may reveal some aspects of shorter term biological processes, but it is well established (Gould, 1980; Schindel, 1980; McCall and Tevesz, 1983) that the lower limit of paleontologic resolution is reached when biological processes operate more quickly than the rate of formation of final undisturbed bedding units.

We have made a polarimetric survey of 84 quasi-stellar objects, to supplement published polarization measurements for two samples of quasars identified with flat-spectrum (core-dominant) radio sources in 5 GHz surveys made at Bonn (Kühr 1980) and at the VLA (Perley 1982). The observations were made using the McDonald 2.1m Struve reflector and the polarimeter described by Breger (1979); the typical accuracy is 0.5% for an 18 mag object after half an hour. Earlier surveys, such as those by Stockman, Moore and Angel (1984), included objects of various radio spectral types, and only a small fraction of the objects showed high polarization (> 3%), but our sample of flat-spectrum quasars reveals many more (about half) of the objects to be highly polarized. Some of them are, expectedly, of the BL Lac class, but many of them have strong broad emission lines. There are two striking correlations among the results:
(1) The degree of polarization is strongly correlated with the dominance of the radio core - specifically, with the ratio, R, of core to lobe luminosity (Fig. 1). For example, about 75% of the objects with log R > 1.25 and redshift z < 1 have p > 3%. This relation implies that if the radio core radiation is beamed, as seems likely, then so is the optical synchrotron component.
(2) The fraction of objects with p > 3% is inversely correlated with redshift (e.g. Fig. 2). The most likely interpretation of this result is that quasars' degree of polarization decreases with decreasing rest wavelength, and the shorter wavelengths are shifted into our wide observational passband at higher redshifts.
